Dr. Greg Baeker appointed to professional advisory board for Ryerson University’s new School of Creative Industries

(TORONTO, ON – August 22, 2013) –Dr. Greg Baeker, Director of Cultural Development at MDB Insight, has been appointed to the founding professional advisory committee for Ryerson University’s new School of Creative Industries. The program, which will launch in September 2013, is the first of its kind in North America.

The interdisciplinary Creative Industries Bachelor of Arts program is intended to prepare the future leaders of Canada’s creative economy to build entrepreneurial careers in media, entertainment, design or the visual and performing arts. The program focuses both on the creative process and the business skills students will need to succeed in creative industries.

“The response to the program has been nothing short of remarkable, drawing applications from around the world,” describes Dr. Baeker. “The creative industries are among the world’s most dynamic emerging sectors. In Ontario alone they contribute more than $12.2 billion annually to the economy.  Within the Greater Toronto Area, more than 130,000 people are employed in close to 10,000 enterprises in this sector and its rate of growth in recent years has surpassed that of financial services, the medical and biotechnology industries, and the food and beverage industry.”

Dr. Baeker is the founder of AuthentiCity, a leader in cultural planning and development. In 2010, AuthentiCity merged with MDB Insight to form the Cultural Development division. His book Rediscovering the Wealth of Places: A Municipal Cultural Planning Handbook for Canadian Communities has received acclaim across Canada and around the world.
