Invitation to participate in a research project

The Government of Alberta Ministry of Indigenous Relations has hired MDB Insight and Points North Creative Inc. to conduct a research project on the best systems in Canada and throughout the world that support Indigenous artists and artisans to have their products be certified as “Authentic Indigenous”.

The main goal of this research project is to gather information on the best “Authentic Indigenous” certification systems in Canada and throughout the world, and to connect with Alberta’s Indigenous artists and artisans to hear about their experience selling their art and crafts. The Ministry of Indigenous Relations hopes that this research will help create a more supportive environment for Indigenous artists and artisans and help better understand your experience as an Indigenous artist and artisan in the province.

There are two ways you can help us and participate in this project:

  1. An online survey has been created that asks questions about how, where and who you sell your art to.

You can complete the survey at this web address: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AB-Indigenous-Arts-Certification .

Participants who take the survey and provide their email will be entered into a draw to win an iPad, or a $500 gift certificate for the art store of their choice as a thank you for completing the survey.

  1. Five focus groups will be held throughout Alberta in April:
  • Edmonton – April 10
  • Lac La Biche – April 11
  • Fort McMurray – April 12
  • Calgary – April 18
  • Grande Prairie April 19

The focus groups will be hosted by MDB Insight, and will run from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM with lunch provided. Travel costs are the responsibility of the participant, however a $200 honorarium will be provided for your completed participation at the focus group.

If you are interested in participating in a focus group, please email Harry Shnider at hshnider@mdbinsight.com and tell him what session you would like to attend and what type of art or craft you make. Harry will email you back and let you know if you have been selected to attend, however seating is limited.
